FACE-OFF AGAINST BREAST CANCER TOURNAMENT
DIVISION DEFINITIONS
Novice: appropriate for beginner players and teams, maybe with a few years of experience, and some, limited experience playing as a team. No former college players at this level.
Recreational: Most players have several years’ experience. Team usually has had organized game experience and may play a regular full season schedule. Former college/college club players are a rarity at this level, but may be appropriate if they’re older (i.e. should not have graduated within the last 10-15 years.)
Competitive: Stronger experienced recreational teams. Players generally have several years experience, and some may have played college hockey. Teams have had significant organized game experience.

The Face Off Against Breast Cancer is a non-USA Hockey tournament.
In the spirit of good sportsmanship, any player in the recreational or novice level that is deemed by the tournament committee to be of an inappropriate level will be removed from the competition. An example of this would be a player exhibiting skills far and above the ability level of the majority of players within that division.
RULES OF PLAY
The Women’s Hockey Association of Middlebury (WHAM) has three objectives in sponsoring this tournament. First, we wish to raise awareness of breast cancer. Second, we wish to raise money for the Cancer Support Program. Third, we wish to play hockey.
Our goal is to have fun. Fair play is the overriding principle of this tournament. The following rules support the principles of fair play and fun.
Good sporting conduct on and off the ice: These standards apply to coaches, players, staff/volunteers, and spectators. Verbal aggression and foul language will not be tolerated and is prohibited. When used as a strategy, physical intimidation and aggression are prohibited.

Smoking is not permitted in any of the buildings and consumption of alcohol is not permitted in the buildings or on the grounds.
Game Parameters Competitive Level:
- Basic USA Hockey rules apply, including USA Hockey offsides for adults.
- Each game will have 2 periods of 15 minute running time and 1 final 12 minute period of stop time.
- Time-outs are not permitted.
- There will be a 3 minute warm-up period before each game, as well as a 1 minute break between periods.
- Slap shots are permitted.
- If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, it will be recorded as a tie game.
Determination of standing:
- Standings will be determined by a point system: A winning team earns 2 points; in tied games, each receives 1 point; 0 points for a loss; teams are ranked according to the sum of points.
- If two teams are tied for points, the win will be awarded to the team that has raised the most money.
Competitive Level Playoffs:
- 3rd and 4th place teams will play first to determine 3rd and 4th place. This playoff game will be structured as follows: there will be three 15 minute periods with the third period being stop time. In the event of a tie, teams will play a 5 minute stop time, sudden death overtime of 4 on 4 players. If there is no score after 5 minutes, the game will be recorded as a tie.
- 1st and 2nd place teams will then play to determine 1st and 2nd place; this championship game will be three 15 minute periods, with the third period being stop time. If the championship game ends in a tie, the two teams will play a 5-minute, stop time, sudden death overtime, 4 on 4 skaters. If after 5 minutes, neither team has scored the winner will be the team that has raised the most money.

Penalties (all divisions):
- A minor penalty is 1.5 minutes; a major penalty is 5 minutes.
- If a player receives 3 penalties, she is expelled from the game and suspended from the next game.
- If a team receives 20 minutes of penalties in 1 game, that team’s coach is expelled from the tournament.
- If a player receives a fighting penalty, she is expelled from the game and from the tournament.
- A “bench” penalty will be assessed to a team for poor sporting conduct.
Team composition (all divisions):
- No team may exceed 22 players on their roster for the tournament.
- All players on each team’s roster must sign the Agreement to Hold Harmless and Assumption of risk prior to stepping on the ice.
- An illegal player participating in a game will cause the team to default that game.
- All players on the same team must wear identical jerseys.
- All players must sign in on the score sheet prior to each game.
