2010 Tournament Results:

CONGRATULATIONS OTTERS!
Saturday, January 23-- After a tough day of competition all around, the Middlebury Otters skated in the championship game against the Green Mountain Thunder of Burlington. At the end of 3 periods, the game was tied at 0-0.  Play proceeded to a 4 on 4, sudden death overtime period, but when that, too remained scoreless, the win was awarded to the team that had raised the most money for the Cancer Patient Support Program.   With a total of over $4,000, that winning team was the Otters! Congratulations to all the teams on a very well-played competitive division.  With the Green Mountain Thunder taking second place honors, the consolation was won by the Burlington Ice Breakers and in 4th place were the Vermont Vixen. We can't wait for more hockey action with the recreational and novice divisions tomorrow.

CONGRATULATIONS 32 DEGREES AND RUSTY BLADES!

Sunday, January 24-- The Recreational and Novice Divisions played in round robin games all day long. These eight women's teams really put on a show! At day's end, the Manchester Rusty Blades earned the 2010 Recreational Division Championship, and Barre's 32 Degrees claimed the Novice Division championship.  Their team names will join the previous ten years' winners, engraved onto the new tournament plaque  that hangs at the Memorial Sports Center. Final standings for the Recreational Division: 2nd place went to the Burlington Tsunamis; 3rd place went to the Rutland Cutting Edge (rec); and in 4th place came the Waterbury Wicked. Final standings for the Novice Division: 2nd place went to the Rutland Cutting Edge (novice); 3rd place went to the Middlebury Mystix Team 2; and in 4th place were the Middlebury Mystix team 1.

CONGRATULATIONS FRIDAY BLEUES!
The much-anticipated grudge match between the Monday Knights and the Friday Bleues took place on Sunday afternoon. End-to-end action, vicious smack talk, blistering shots, and ridonculous goaltending ensued... but in the end the Bleues emerged victorious, with a tight 3-2 win. Bleues captain Dan McIntosh received the elegant "Broken Cup" cup on behalf of his team. Better luck next year, Monday Knights... and thanks to all our "Friends and Family" Division players.

AND THE GRAND TOTAL IS...

Friday, February 12--We did it!  We're proud to announce that we've hit the $40,000 mark!  Thanks to our donors, business sponsors, and community supporters.  Your support matters. Thank you!
Wednesday, January 27-- The grand total is still rising!  With a contribution of over $2,000 from Two Brothers Tavern and The Horse Traders (from our benefit Saturday night, and Frank Nisun Day proceeds), our total has now grown to over $38,000!  Who knows, maybe the $40,000 mark is in our sights! Thanks to those who are still sending in donations. Every dollar counts.
Monday, January 25--At this time, the final tally for money raised for the Cancer Patient Support Program isn't complete yet-- there are still many donations yet to be counted.  However, at the end of the day Sunday, the money in hand was already over $34,000!  That's without counting the donations collected throughout the weekend at the rink, the benefits from the tournament party at Two Brothers' Tavern and Frank Nisun Day, and fees generated by the Friends and Family Division.  We're on track to break our record! Please check back to hear the grand total soon.

11th Annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” Tournament

To Be Held in Middlebury January 23 and 24, 2010

Middlebury, VT—

The Middlebury Otters and the Middlebury Mystix, two women’s community ice hockey teams, proudly host the 11th annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” hockey tournament on Saturday and Sunday, January 23 and 24, 2010, at the Howard Brush Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury.

Bigger and better than ever, the tournament has expanded to a two-day format with three women’s divisions (competitive, recreational, and novice) as well as a “Friends and Family” division. Overall, the event includes twelve women’s hockey teams from all over Vermont, competing in games throughout both days, with ongoing hospitality and refreshments in the Warming Hut. Visiting teams include: Burlington Ice Breakers, Green Mountain Thunder, Vermont Vixen, Burlington Tsunamis, Waterbury Wicked, Manchester Rusty Blades, Rutland Cutting Edge, and Barre 32 Degrees.

The Tournament weekend includes a fun-filled benefit concert and after-party on Saturday night, January 23 from 9 pm to 1 am. Local favorites “The Horse Traders” will play covers and original rock tunes at Two Brothers’ Tavern on Main Street in downtown Middlebury.  The Horse Traders and Two Brothers’ Tavern have generously offered to donate the performance, all the proceeds from the cover charge that night, and 10% of all the sales at Two Brothers’ upstairs restaurant and downstairs lounge to the Face Off Against Breast Cancer.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Cancer Patient Support Program’s (CPSP) Emergency Fund, which provides short-term, emergency financial relief to local patients in need. This important program addresses the hidden impacts that cancer can have on families: those who, because of cancer, have lost their jobs and may lose their car or home because they are in treatment; those who are too sick to work, or who have soaring medical expenses and limited co-pays; or those who have no insurance coverage at all.

The tournament was established in 1999 when a member of the Middlebury Otters was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, her survivor story is now a success.  The need for support continues, however: the American Cancer Society estimates that over 190,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010—480 in Vermont alone.  Both the Otters and Mystix are proud to include breast cancer survivors on their rosters.

Last year’s Face Off Against Breast Cancer tournament raised over $35,000, and the Otters and Mystix are hoping to break that record in 2010. Members of the team are requesting support in the form of individual player sponsorships, as well as business sponsorships in the amount of $25. Donations may be sent to the Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP), c/o FOABC Committee / P.O. Box 27, Middlebury, VT 05753; or contact the tournament co-chairs to support a player near you: Liza Sacheli Lloyd (liza@middlebury.edu or 802-443-3169); or Cathy Chase (cathychasevt@gmail.com or 802-382-9469).
